# Bookkeeping, Tax Preparation Support and Virtual CFO Services for Detroit Businesses

Canonical: https://finbryn.com/us/locations/detroit

Remote service for Detroit businesses, contracted in the United States.

Finbryn provides remote bookkeeping, tax preparation support and virtual CFO work for Detroit businesses, with books kept in QuickBooks Online or Xero and built around Michigan and City of Detroit rules. As of October 8, 2026, Detroit taxes corporations at 2.00% and partnership income at 2.40% for resident partners and 1.20% for nonresident partners, Michigan taxes C corporations at 6%, and Michigan allows no local sales tax.

Detroit bookkeeping starts with a different question than most American cities: how many income taxes does this business owe? Michigan taxes C corporations at a flat 6%. The City of Detroit adds 2.00% on corporations, taxes partnership income partner by partner, and withholds from employees as well. Hamtramck, Highland Park and Pontiac, which sit inside or beside the same metro, run their own city income taxes on separate schedules. Sales tax is the easy part, since Michigan lets no city or county add its own.

The business base is built on making things. Automotive suppliers and tooling shops, mobility and electric vehicle start-ups, hospitals and clinics, construction firms working on redevelopment, and freight and cross-border logistics operators all keep books here, and each has its own cost structure.

Finbryn has no Detroit office and no local staff. It's a remote service, contracted in the United States, and the sections below cover the rules that change how a Detroit ledger is built.

## Michigan's 6% tax and the city's 2.00% on the same profit

Michigan's Corporate Income Tax is a flat 6% on C corporations and on businesses taxed as corporations for federal purposes. A small business alternative credit offers an alternate rate of 1.8% of adjusted business income for those who qualify (Michigan Treasury, checked October 8, 2026).

Detroit stacks its own tax on top. The city rate is 2.00% for corporations. Partnership income is taxed by partner: 2.40% for resident partners, 1.20% for nonresident partners and 2.00% for partners that are corporations. Estates and trusts pay 1.2%. The Michigan Department of Treasury processes Detroit's returns and payments, so a business already registered for Michigan taxes needs no separate city registration and files using its federal employer identification number.

The annual city return is due on the 15th day of the 4th month after the year ends. Calendar-year estimates are due April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15. The ledger has to carry two income tax provisions, state and city, with separate payments and separate dates.

## Detroit employer withholding, and the neighbors with their own city tax

Employers withhold Detroit income tax from W-2 wages: 2.4% for residents of the city and 1.2% for nonresidents, according to the city's business income tax page. Independent contractors paid on a 1099 aren't withheld from, which makes worker classification a tax issue as well as a payroll one.

Michigan Treasury lists 24 cities that levy a city income tax. Detroit is the one Treasury administers. Hamtramck, Highland Park and Pontiac run their own forms, filings and payments, so a business with a location or employees in one of them files with that city directly. A firm with a shop in Hamtramck and an office in Detroit has two separate city obligations, even though the buildings are a short drive apart.

## One sales tax rate, and the use tax on what you buy

Michigan's sales tax is 6%, and the state doesn't allow cities or other local units to add sales or use tax, so there is one rate whether a sale happens in Detroit, Dearborn or Troy. Residential electricity, natural gas and home heating fuel are taxed at 4%. The sales tax license is valid from January 1 through December 31 (Michigan Treasury, checked October 8, 2026).

The part that takes bookkeeping effort is the use tax. A 6% use tax applies to taxable items brought into Michigan or bought from out-of-state sellers that don't collect Michigan tax, with a credit for tax paid to another state. Equipment, tooling and software bought from outside the state are typical cases for manufacturers, and a purchase ledger that flags out-of-state vendors is what keeps the use tax return honest.

## Payroll: a wage step to $15.00 and earned sick time

Michigan's minimum wage is $13.73 an hour from January 1, 2026 and rises to $15.00 on January 1, 2027 under Senate Bill 8, per the state labor department. The Earned Sick Time Act took effect February 21, 2025. Employees accrue at least one hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked. Employers with 11 or more employees can cap use at 72 hours a year. A small business, defined as 10 or fewer employees, can cap it at 40 hours.

For the books, accrued sick time is a liability that grows with hours worked, so payroll software has to calculate it and the ledger has to record it each period instead of at year end. Employers close to the 11-employee line should also track headcount over time, because the status changes once an employer has 11 or more for 20 or more workweeks.

## What each Detroit industry needs from the books

Automotive suppliers and tooling shops need cost accounting that separates tooling the customer owns from tooling the supplier capitalizes, plus a plan for annual price reductions negotiated with vehicle makers. Inventory in several stages, returnable packaging and customer-owned material all complicate the balance sheet.

Mobility and electric vehicle start-ups spend heavily on research before revenue, and section 174A lets taxpayers deduct domestic research costs for taxable years beginning after December 31, 2024 (IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-28), so project-level tagging matters. Hospitals, clinics and dental groups separate patient receivables from insurer timing. Construction and redevelopment firms need job costing and retainage tracking. Freight and cross-border operators track per-load costs and fuel, and may handle payments in two currencies.

## Counties and cities we work across

Finbryn serves Metro Detroit from one remote team. The city a business sits in decides whether a city income tax applies. The table lists the places this page covers, and Treasury's list of 24 income-tax cities governs the last column.

| Place | County | City income tax |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Detroit | Wayne County | Yes, administered by Michigan Treasury |
| Hamtramck | Wayne County | Yes, administered by the city |
| Highland Park | Wayne County | Yes, administered by the city |
| Dearborn | Wayne County | Not on Treasury's list |
| Livonia | Wayne County | Not on Treasury's list |
| Pontiac | Oakland County | Yes, administered by the city |
| Southfield | Oakland County | Not on Treasury's list |
| Troy | Oakland County | Not on Treasury's list |
| Royal Oak | Oakland County | Not on Treasury's list |
| Farmington Hills | Oakland County | Not on Treasury's list |
| Warren | Macomb County | Not on Treasury's list |
| Sterling Heights | Macomb County | Not on Treasury's list |

Michigan's own taxes apply everywhere in the table. Employees often live in one city and work in another, so withholding depends on both addresses.

## Deadlines and registrations for a Detroit business

| Item | Agency | Timing |
| --- | --- | --- |
| LLC annual statement ($25; $50 penalty after the due date) | Michigan LARA | February 15 each year; online filing opens October 15 |
| Detroit corporate or partnership annual return | Michigan Treasury, for the City of Detroit | 15th day of the 4th month after year end |
| Detroit estimated tax, calendar year | Michigan Treasury | April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15 |
| Sales tax license renewal | Michigan Treasury | License valid January 1 through December 31 |
| Michigan minimum wage step to $15.00 | State of Michigan | January 1, 2027 |
| S corporation and partnership returns | IRS | March 15, 2027 |
| C corporation and individual returns | IRS | April 15, 2027 |

Federal dates come from IRS Publication 509. A new LLC formed after September 30 skips the February 15 statement that follows, because its first one falls a year later.

## Hiring in Metro Detroit compared with working with Finbryn

The Bureau of Labor Statistics' May 2025 estimates count 14,730 jobs in the bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerk group (occupation code 43-3031) in the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn metro, at a mean annual wage of $53,540 and a median of $51,480. Accountants and auditors number 19,390 jobs at a mean of $91,310. Financial managers, the closest group to a controller or part-time CFO, number 11,670 jobs at a mean of $168,730, and the metro's concentration of that occupation is 1.13 times the national average.

Add payroll tax, benefits, software and the cost of finding someone, and the wage line understates the real cost. A Finbryn plan is a fixed monthly fee that works remotely. If your shop floor needs a person in the building handling paper and phone calls, hire that person and use a plan for the books behind them.

## How a Detroit engagement runs, and what it costs

Documents travel through a secure client portal, and bank and card feeds connect into QuickBooks Online or Xero. The file stays in your name, and there's no Detroit office to visit.

Essentials is $249 a month for up to $50,000 in monthly expenses; Growth is $549 a month up to $150,000. The [pricing page](/us/pricing) lists the other plans. Tax work is preparation support: schedules and workpapers are prepared for review and signature by the credentialed preparer, who signs and files the return, and the [about page](/us/about) names the people. Start on the [contact page](/us/contact), tell us which of these layers apply, and send recent statements. You'll get a reconciled first close with an open-items list. ## Frequently asked questions: Detroit

**Q: Does Finbryn have an office in Detroit?**

A: No. Finbryn works remotely for Detroit businesses and, as of October 8, 2026, has no Detroit address or local staff. The work is contracted in the United States through Northlane Solutions Inc, a Delaware company.

**Q: What income taxes does a Detroit corporation or partnership owe?**

A: Michigan taxes C corporations at 6%, and Detroit taxes corporations at 2.00% and partnership income at 2.40% for resident partners, 1.20% for nonresident partners and 2.00% for partners that are corporations (Michigan Treasury and the City of Detroit, checked October 8, 2026). The city return is due the 15th day of the 4th month after year end. A credentialed preparer signs the returns, and we prepare the supporting schedules.

**Q: Do you handle Detroit employer withholding on the books?**

A: Yes, on the payroll side. Detroit withholds 2.4% for resident employees and 1.2% for nonresidents, per the city's income tax page checked October 8, 2026. We book the withholding as a liability and match it to each return that Michigan Treasury processes.

**Q: My business is in Hamtramck or Highland Park. Does Detroit's tax apply?**

A: Those cities run their own income taxes, separate from Detroit's. Michigan Treasury's list of 24 income-tax cities, checked October 8, 2026, names both, plus Pontiac, as cities that administer their own forms and payments. A business with sites in two of them files with each.

**Q: Is there a local sales tax in Detroit?**

A: No. Michigan's 6% sales tax is the only rate, and the state doesn't allow cities or local units to add one (Michigan Treasury, checked October 8, 2026). The use tax on out-of-state purchases is the part that needs tracking, with credit for tax paid to another state.

**Q: When does a Michigan LLC file its annual statement?**

A: By February 15 each year, for $25, with a $50 penalty after the due date. Online filing opens October 15. An LLC formed after September 30 skips the February 15 that follows its formation (Michigan LARA, checked October 8, 2026).

**Q: What do Michigan's minimum wage and earned sick time rules mean for payroll?**

A: The minimum wage is $13.73 an hour in 2026 and $15.00 from January 1, 2027. Under the Earned Sick Time Act, employees accrue one hour per 30 hours worked, with use capped at 72 hours a year, or 40 hours at a small business of 10 or fewer employees. We track the accrual as a liability each pay period.

**Q: Do you work with automotive suppliers and tooling shops?**

A: Yes. The bookkeeping covers inventory by stage, customer-owned versus capitalized tooling and project-level research tags. As of tax years beginning after December 31, 2024, section 174A allows domestic research costs to be deducted, so we keep those costs separated for the credentialed preparer.

**Q: How does the cost compare with hiring a bookkeeper in Metro Detroit?**

A: BLS May 2025 data puts the mean wage in the metro's bookkeeping clerk group at $53,540 before payroll tax, benefits and software. Finbryn's Essentials plan is $249 a month and Growth is $549, and a plan can cover a gap in place of a full-time hire.
