# 1099 filing checker: do you need to file a 1099?

Canonical: https://finbryn.com/us/tools/1099-filing-checker

Yes, if you paid a contractor who is not a corporation $2,000 or more in 2026, you generally file Form 1099-NEC by January 31 of the next year. The line was $600 for 2025. Card and PayPal payments, corporations, and personal or merchandise payments mostly fall outside it. Enter a payment below for the answer and the due date.

A filing check built from the facts you enter and the IRS instructions as checked on the date below. It is an estimate of your filing duty, not tax advice, and nothing you type is sent to us.

## Worked example

You paid a freelance designer $1,850 by bank transfer in 2026 and another $400 by credit card. The $400 card payment is not yours to report: card payments fall under the processor's Form 1099-K reporting, not your 1099-NEC, so it is left out of your total. Your total is $1,850, which is under the $2,000 threshold for 2026, so you do not file a 1099-NEC for the designer.

If the bank transfers had totaled $2,000 or more, you would file Form 1099-NEC and give the designer a copy by Monday, February 1, 2027, because January 31, 2027 is a Sunday. The same $1,850 paid in 2025 would have crossed the old $600 line, with the form due Monday, February 2, 2026.

## FAQ

**Q: What is the 1099 filing threshold for 2026?**

A: $2,000. For payments made in 2026, the threshold for Form 1099-NEC and for most Form 1099-MISC boxes rose from $600 to $2,000. The IRS can adjust it for inflation starting with payments made in 2027, so check the IRS instructions for that year. Payments made in 2025 still use $600, and gross proceeds paid to an attorney (Form 1099-MISC box 10) stay at $600.

**Q: Do I file a 1099 for payments made by credit card or PayPal?**

A: No. The card processor or payment network reports those payments on Form 1099-K, so you do not report them on a 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC. A payment app or marketplace such as PayPal files Form 1099-K when a payee's payments are more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions in the year. A card processor reports card payments whatever the amount. Only what you paid by check, bank transfer or cash goes into your own total.

**Q: Do I send a 1099 to an LLC or a corporation?**

A: Usually not to a corporation, including an LLC taxed as a C or S corporation. Legal services, medical and health care payments and gross proceeds paid to an attorney are still reported even when the payee is a corporation. A single-member LLC taxed as a sole proprietor or a partnership is not a corporation for this rule, so check the payee's Form W-9.

**Q: When is the 1099-NEC due?**

A: January 31 of the year after the payments, both to the IRS and to the payee. A weekend date moves to the next business day, so 2025 payments were due Monday, February 2, 2026 and 2026 payments are due Monday, February 1, 2027. Form 1099-MISC goes to the payee by January 31 and to the IRS by February 28 on paper or March 31 if filed electronically.

**Q: Do I still file a 1099 if I paid a contractor less than $2,000?**

A: Not for 2026 payments, unless you withheld backup withholding from that payee, in which case you report the payee whatever the amount. The threshold is on the total you paid the person across the year, so add up every payment before you decide. Collecting a Form W-9 early is cheap insurance if the total later crosses the line.

**Q: What is the penalty for not filing a 1099?**

A: For returns required to be filed in 2027, which covers 2026 payments, the penalty is $340 per return for a return filed late or not at all, $60 if corrected within 30 days of the due date, and $130 if corrected by August 1. Intentional disregard costs at least $690 per return. Reasonable cause can reduce it, and the IRS decides.
