Multi-year catch-up

Short answer

Multi-year catch-up bookkeeping for Hong Kong companies whose records have fallen behind. Finbryn reconciles the backlog month by month in Xero, QuickBooks Online or Zoho Books, corrects miscoded entries, and logs every adjustment, so the file is ready for BIR51 and the statutory audit that has to accompany it.

Why a backlog bites harder in Hong Kong

A business that falls behind on its bookkeeping in most markets can quietly catch up before tax season. In Hong Kong, every active company still needs an annual audit by a practising Hong Kong CPA regardless of size, and BIR51 has to be filed together with those audited accounts. A backlog does not sit quietly; it sits directly in front of the audit, and the audit sits in front of the filing.

How the catch-up runs

We collect statements for every bank, card and payment account across the backlog period, then move forward month by month from the last period that reconciles cleanly. Each month is categorised, matched to statements and agreed to a closing balance before the next one starts, rather than reconciling the whole span in one pass and hoping the totals hold.

What tends to be wrong

Common issues in a Hong Kong backlog include director loan movements booked as expenses, intercompany transfers coded as sales, and MPF contributions that were never matched back to payroll. Every correction goes into a written adjustments log naming the period, the entry and the reason, so nothing changes in the file without a trail behind it.

What comes out the other end

A reconciled ledger across the whole backlog, a profit and loss account and balance sheet for each period, and the adjustments log itself, inside the Xero, QuickBooks Online or Zoho Books file you already hold. Your appointed practising Hong Kong CPA then audits from that base rather than from raw bank statements.

Next step

Once the backlog clears, monthly bookkeeping keeps it from building up again. Catch-up work is quoted per backlog month once we have seen the accounts; see pricing for how that works, or book a call if a BIR51 deadline is close.

Questions

Frequently asked questions: Multi-year catch-up

Will catch-up work change figures we already reported?

Only where the records show an error, and every change is recorded in a written adjustments log you can review.

Does catch-up bookkeeping delay our audit further?

The opposite. A reconciled backlog is what lets your practising Hong Kong CPA start fieldwork rather than waiting on raw statements.

Do you file BIR51 as part of catch-up?

No. We prepare the reconciled records. BIR51 is filed once the audited accounts it must accompany are signed off by your appointed Hong Kong CPA.

What is not included in a multi-year catch-up project?

We reconcile and categorise the backlog; we do not decide whether a prior year's filed Profits Tax return needs amending, which is confirmed separately with your practising Hong Kong CPA once the corrected figures are known.

Do you need the same software across every year of the backlog?

No. If your company switched platforms partway through the backlog period, each year is reconciled in whichever system held the records for that period, then brought forward into your current software once fully caught up and closed.

How many years can you catch up at once?

As many as you have statements for. We scope the engagement by backlog period once the accounts and the volume involved are reviewed.

Will catch-up work change numbers you already reported?

Only where the records show an error, and every change is recorded in a written adjustments log you can review.

Do you handle overdue tax filings as part of a catch-up?

We prepare the books and the supporting schedules; a credentialed signer or registered filing partner handles the actual filing.

What is included in multi-year catch-up?

Multi-year catch-up covers every backlog year sorted into categories and reconciled to bank, card and processor statements and a written adjustments log covering each correction made to prior periods. The exact scope is agreed and set out in writing before work starts, so you know precisely what is and is not covered before the first deliverable arrives.
