Bookkeeping

Catch-up and cleanup bookkeeping

Short answer

Months or years of Australian books brought current and reconciled, with a written record of every adjustment, so the next BAS or tax return has clean figures to work from instead of a backlog. We quote per backlog month, correct miscoded transactions, check compulsory super and STP records, and agree opening balances so ongoing bookkeeping starts clean.

Getting current before the next due date

A backlog of unreconciled months is one of the most common reasons an Australian small business ends up scrambling before a BAS due date, or paying a registered agent extra to reconstruct records at tax time. Finbryn brings backlog months up to date: transactions categorised and coded to the correct GST treatment, every bank, card and payment-processor account reconciled to its statement, and duplicate, missing or miscoded entries corrected.

We work backlog month by backlog month, quoting per month once we have seen the accounts involved, so you know the cost before we start rather than after. Every adjustment we make to a prior period goes into a written adjustments log: what changed, why, and what it affects, so nothing gets quietly rewritten without a trail you can show a lender, an adviser or a registered agent.

Compulsory super contributions and STP payroll records get particular attention during catch-up work, because a missed or late super payment carries its own consequences separate from any GST issue, and Payday Super, effective 1 July 2026, ties the super payment to the wage payment going forward, so any backlog in payroll needs resolving before that timing requirement bites.

Opening balances

Once the backlog is cleared, we agree opening balances with you so ongoing monthly bookkeeping starts from a clean base, rather than carrying an unresolved discrepancy forward quarter after quarter.

Software

Catch-up work happens inside your existing Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks Online file, or we set one up under your own subscription if the business has been running without proper software until now.

Questions

Frequently asked questions: Catch-up and cleanup bookkeeping

How far back can catch-up bookkeeping go?

As far back as bank and card statements exist. We quote per backlog month once we have seen the accounts involved.

Will you change figures that were already used in a lodged BAS?

Only where the records show an error, and every change is recorded in a written adjustments log rather than silently rewritten.

Does catch-up work cover superannuation and payroll, not just GST?

Yes. We check compulsory super contributions and STP records during catch-up, since a payroll backlog has its own consequences separate from GST.

What software access do you need to start a catch-up?

Read-only access to the existing Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks Online file (or the source data if there is no file yet), plus bank statements or feeds covering the backlog period.

How is a catch-up project priced?

Per backlog month once we have reviewed the volume and state of the records involved, rather than a flat fee regardless of how much cleanup is actually needed.

How far back can you go?

As far back as you have bank and card statements. We quote per backlog month after seeing the accounts involved.

Will you change figures that were already reported?

Only where the records show an error, and every change goes in a written adjustments log.

How do we get started with catch-up and cleanup bookkeeping?

Getting started with catch-up and cleanup bookkeeping begins with a short review of your current records and software access. Once that is done we confirm scope and timing in writing, and ongoing work begins on the schedule agreed with you.

What if our records for catch-up and cleanup bookkeeping are not up to date?

If your records are behind, we scope a catch-up first so catch-up and cleanup bookkeeping starts from a clean, reconciled base. That catch-up is priced and timed separately from the ongoing engagement, so you always know what each part costs.
