Books, reconciled every week
Bookkeeping
Finbryn keeps books for Australian businesses in Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks Online, in a file you own. Transactions are coded to GST tax codes under the written supervision of your TPB-registered agent, every bank and card account is reconciled, and monthly reports are ready for your registered agent at BAS time.

What Australian bookkeeping with Finbryn covers
Australian bookkeeping carries a job most US or UK bookkeeping does not: every transaction has to sit on the correct GST tax code from the day it is entered, because that coding feeds the BAS. We keep books in Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks Online, categorise transactions against a chart of accounts built for how the business runs, and reconcile every bank, card and payment-processor account each month.
Australia's income year runs from 1 July to 30 June, and most GST-registered businesses report on a quarterly cycle (28 October, 28 February, 28 April, 28 July for the 2026-27 year). We close the books to that rhythm so the numbers are ready before a due date arrives, not scrambled together the week of. A business that reaches A$75,000 in GST turnover has 21 days to register for GST, and we flag that threshold as soon as a client's rolling turnover gets close, well before it becomes a compliance problem.
We prepare the books; we do not lodge the BAS or the income tax return ourselves. Once your TPB-registered agent has signed a written supervision agreement with us and you have consented in writing, we prepare that work for the agent to lodge; until then, monthly bookkeeping is all we do.
Beyond the monthly close
Some Australian businesses need more than a monthly close. We also cover chart of accounts design, inventory accounting with proper cost of goods sold, a fixed asset register for depreciation, and multi-currency bookkeeping for businesses trading in more than Australian dollars. Superannuation deserves a specific mention: the compulsory super contribution rate sits at 12% of qualifying earnings, and from 1 July 2026 employers must pay it alongside wages under Payday Super, so payroll postings and super accruals need to line up every pay run, not just at quarter end.

- Cash basis bookkeepingBooks kept on a cash basis, recording income and expenses when money actually moves, for owners who want simple books that match their bank balance.
- Accrual basis bookkeepingBooks kept on an accrual basis, matching income and expenses to the period they were earned or incurred, so reports reflect the real state of the business.
- Catch-up and cleanup bookkeepingMonths or years of books brought up to date and reconciled, with a written record of every adjustment, so monthly bookkeeping can start from a clean base.

- Multi-currency bookkeepingBookkeeping for businesses that bill, pay or hold funds in more than one currency, with exchange gains and losses tracked separately from operating results.
- Inventory accountingInventory tracked from purchase through sale, with cost of goods sold calculated properly instead of estimated, on a periodic or perpetual basis.
- Fixed asset registerA running register of equipment, vehicles and other fixed assets, with depreciation calculated and posted on a set schedule so the balance sheet stays accurate.
- Intercompany accountingBookkeeping across two or more related entities, with intercompany loans, charges and transfers tracked and eliminated so consolidated reports are not overstated.
- Class and location trackingTransactions tagged by class, location, property or department, so profit and loss can be sliced by the parts of the business that actually matter to you.
- Receipt capture with Dext and HubdocReceipts and bills captured through Dext or Hubdoc and matched to the right transaction automatically, so paperwork stops piling up at month end.

Questions
Frequently asked questions: Bookkeeping
Do you lodge our BAS or tax return for us?
No. We prepare the books and the supporting figures. Lodgement is handled by a registered agent under a supervision arrangement, or by your own appointed adviser, consistent with Tax Practitioners Board rules on outsourced work.
Which software do you work in?
Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks Online, whichever you already run. If you have no file yet, we set one up under your own subscription so you own it from day one.
Do you code our GST tax codes and BAS-related transactions yourselves?
We code transactions to GST tax codes, but only under the written supervision of your TPB-registered agent, who remains responsible for anything that counts as a BAS service. We flag before any of that work starts.
Can you bring us up to date before the next BAS is due?
Yes. Catch-up work is quoted per backlog month once we have seen the accounts involved, and we prioritise getting current before your next quarterly due date.
What is not included in the monthly bookkeeping plan?
Lodging your BAS, filing your income tax return, running payroll and giving tax advice sit outside the base plan. We prepare the figures a registered agent or your own adviser needs for those, and quote payroll or tax preparation support separately.
What happens at handover if we ever move providers?
Your Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks Online file, reconciliation history and open-items log stay in your own subscription throughout, so an incoming bookkeeper or agent can pick the file up directly without a data migration.
How is monthly bookkeeping priced?
Plans are scoped to transaction volume and the number of accounts, not a flat monthly rate for every business. Book a call and we quote against your actual bank feeds and current file.
What access do you need to our bank and software accounts?
Read-only bank feed access and a user login inside your own Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks Online subscription. We never ask for online banking credentials or standalone authority to move funds.
