Busy season tax prep support

Short answer

Busy-season workpaper support gives Hong Kong CPA practices extra hands before profits tax and audit season: source documents organised, trial balances tied out and draft schedules built to HKFRS, ready for your practising CPA to audit and for BIR51 to be filed against. Finbryn never audits or files anything itself.

The shape of Hong Kong's busy season

Every active Hong Kong company, dormant ones aside, needs its accounts audited each year, and most practices see that work bunch up around their clients' financial year-ends. Adding a full-time preparer for a few compressed months rarely makes sense for a small or mid-sized practice. Busy-season support is capacity you add ahead of the crunch and scale back once fieldwork clears.

What our team actually does

Work starts with organising the source documents a client has provided: bank statements, invoices, payroll records and the prior year's audited accounts. We tie the trial balance to supporting schedules, reconcile MPF contributions against payroll, and build draft workpapers to HKFRS presentation, so your audit team opens a file that is ready for fieldwork rather than a folder of source documents.

Where the credentialed line sits

This is preparation support, not the audit itself. Hong Kong has no small-company audit exemption, so a practising Hong Kong CPA at your practice reviews the file, performs the audit and signs the opinion. The BIR51 profits tax return is then filed by your practice together with those audited accounts. We do not audit and we do not file.

The employer's return sits on its own clock

Separately from the audit cycle, the employer's return (BIR56A) is issued each year on 1 April and has to be filed within one month of issue. We can prepare the payroll schedules behind it on the same timeline, alongside audit-season workpapers.

Ramping up and back down

Practices often add this capacity a few weeks before their heaviest audit fieldwork window and taper it off once the bulk of that year's opinions are signed.

Questions

Frequently asked questions: Busy season tax prep support

Who actually signs off the audit, your team or ours?

Yours. A practising Hong Kong CPA at your practice performs the audit and signs the opinion; we only build the workpapers and schedules behind it.

Can audited accounts be filed without your involvement in the audit?

Yes, and that is exactly the structure. We prepare the file for your audit team; the audit and the BIR51 filing that follows both stay with your practice.

Do you handle the employer's return as well as audit workpapers?

We can prepare the payroll schedules behind the employer's return (BIR56A) on its own one-month filing clock, alongside audit-season work.

How quickly can capacity ramp up before our busiest fieldwork window?

Most practices add support two to three weeks ahead of their heaviest period, though the exact ramp depends on how much prior-year file history needs review first.

Can support scale down again once busy season ends?

Yes. Capacity is agreed for the season and reviewed with you before it renews, so a practice is not left paying for fieldwork-level support once its profits tax and audit season has actually wound down for the year.

Does your team sign or file anything?

No. We prepare workpapers and draft input for your credentialed preparers, who review and sign every return.

Can you flex up just for filing season?

Yes. Firms typically add this capacity a few weeks before a deadline and scale it back down after.

How is busy season tax prep support priced?

Pricing for busy season tax prep support depends on your transaction volume, the software you use, and how much cleanup is needed before ongoing work starts. Current ranges are published on the pricing page, and your exact fee is confirmed in writing before anything begins.

What software works with busy season tax prep support?

Busy season tax prep support runs inside QuickBooks Online or Xero, whichever you already use. If you are not yet set up in either, we can configure a file in your name so you keep ownership of it once the engagement is under way.
