Illustrative: a UK limited company behind on VAT and management accounts

Illustrative example
Working paperIllustrative example
Challenge
A UK limited company offering professional services had fallen several VAT quarters behind on reconciled bookkeeping, relying on estimates rather than actual figures when its accountant submitted each return. The director had no reliable management accounts to show a lender and was unsure whether the business was set up correctly for Making Tax Digital.
Approach
Reconstruct the backlog period transaction by transaction in Xero, reconcile every bank and card account against statements, rebuild a VAT-compliant chart of accounts aligned to Making Tax Digital digital record-keeping requirements, and produce management accounts for the reconstructed period.
Outcome
The deliverable in an engagement like this is a fully reconciled Xero file covering the backlog period, monthly management accounts the director could show a lender, and MTD-compliant digital records ready for the company's credentialed signer to prepare the next VAT return from.

This is an illustrative example based on a common engagement type. It does not describe a real client, and no results are claimed.
