Records reconstruction
When the original books are gone or unreliable, Finbryn rebuilds a business's financial history from bank, card and payment-processor statements rather than the missing internal records. The result is a reconstructed profit and loss and balance sheet for each affected period, with every assumption documented so a TPB-registered agent or a lender can trust the numbers.

Rebuilding books that were never usable to begin with
Some Australian businesses are not behind so much as undocumented: a bookkeeper left without handing anything over, a Xero file was never properly reconciled, or several years of transactions sit coded to one catch-all account. Finbryn treats this as a rebuild rather than a tidy-up, working from bank and card statements, payment-processor reports and supplier confirmations, because entries that cannot be checked against a source are not treated as fact.
We reconstruct a chart of accounts around how the business actually runs today, then map every statement line into it. An invoice that cannot be found gets flagged as an estimate rather than folded in as though it were confirmed. That distinction holds weight under Australian Accounting Standards, and it matters just as much to the TPB-registered agent who eventually lodges a BAS or return built from the result: a documented assumption can be defended, a silent one cannot.
Superannuation history is checked closely during a reconstruction, since the contribution rate sits at 12% of qualifying earnings and a shortfall that goes unnoticed can turn into a director penalty issue later. Where the business also operates as a base rate entity for company tax purposes, we flag that classification early, since it decides whether the 25% or the standard 30% company tax rate applies to whatever income the reconstruction confirms. This kind of project often runs alongside a multi-year catch-up, especially where GST reporting is also behind, and sometimes precedes a wind-down where the final numbers need to stand on their own.
Once the rebuild is done, ongoing bookkeeping settles into Finbryn's normal rhythm: reconciled weekly, closed early the following month, reviewed by a senior reviewer before it reaches you.
Questions
Frequently asked questions: Records reconstruction
What if some of our financial records are just gone?
We rebuild from whatever primary sources survive: bank and card statements, payment-processor reports, supplier confirmations and prior BAS lodgements, and document every gap rather than estimating silently.
Can reconstructed books support a late BAS or income tax lodgement?
Yes. We build the reconstruction to a standard your TPB-registered agent can rely on, and flag every line that rests on an estimate rather than a source document.
Does a reconstruction check whether superannuation was paid correctly?
Yes. We check contribution history against the 12% compulsory super contribution rate and flag any shortfall so it can be corrected before it becomes a bigger problem.
What software do you use to reconstruct missing records?
We rebuild directly inside Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks Online using bank feeds, statements and any surviving source documents, so the reconstructed history lives in the same software you use going forward.
What if some records are simply gone?
We work from what remains, bank and card statements, vendor confirmations, prior filings, and document every assumption we have to make.
Can reconstructed books support a tax filing?
Yes. We build them to a standard your credentialed preparer can rely on, and we flag anywhere the reconstruction is an estimate rather than a fact.
How is records reconstruction priced?
Pricing for records reconstruction depends on your transaction volume, the software you use, and how much cleanup is needed before ongoing work starts. Current ranges are published on the pricing page, and your exact fee is confirmed in writing before anything begins.
What software works with records reconstruction?
Records reconstruction runs inside QuickBooks Online or Xero, whichever you already use. If you are not yet set up in either, we can configure a file in your name so you keep ownership of it once the engagement is under way.
