Budgeting

Short answer

Annual budgeting for UAE companies builds a month-by-month plan from your actual historical numbers, broken out by entity, licence or location where it matters, then tracks real performance against it every month so a variance gets explained rather than discovered at year end.

The default plan nobody actually believes

A budget assembled by taking last year's numbers and nudging every line up by a flat percentage rarely survives contact with the first real month, because nobody who built it actually believed the figure to begin with. We start instead from the historical actuals sitting in Xero, QuickBooks Online or Zoho Books, and tie each material line to a real decision behind it, a new hire, a second free zone entity, a product launch, so every number traces back to something someone actually chose.

Structure follows the business, not the other way round

A single DIFC entity with one revenue line does not need the same budget shape as a group running a mainland trading licence alongside a DMCC or JAFZA free zone company. We split the plan by entity, licence or location only where that split would actually change a decision someone is going to make. Where it would not change anything, the budget stays simple rather than growing structure for its own sake.

The Corporate Tax dates baked into the plan

Corporate Tax falls due within nine months of each tax period ending, and Small Business Relief only stays available while revenue holds at or below AED 3,000,000 across the current and every prior tax period, a line worth planning around rather than discovering has quietly disappeared. A free zone entity's budget also has to track whatever share of its income counts as Qualifying Income, since that share is what actually protects its 0% rate.

A plan is only useful while someone checks it

A budget nobody compares against actual results each month has already expired as a forecast the day it was written. The monthly variance, what ran ahead, what fell short and why, is the part that keeps it alive, and that same monthly comparison is exactly what feeds into ongoing FP&A tracking once a single annual number stops being enough on its own.

Questions

Frequently asked questions: Budgeting

When should we build next year's budget?

Most UAE companies start budgeting a month or two before their financial year begins, using the prior 9 to 12 months of actuals as the base.

Do you include Corporate Tax and VAT payment dates in the budget?

Yes, as cash outflows on the calendar they actually fall due, since Corporate Tax at 9% above AED 375,000 of taxable income and VAT payments are common causes of a cash surprise if they are not planned for.

Can the budget cover both a mainland entity and a free zone entity?

Yes. A group running a mainland licence alongside one or more free zone entities gets a consolidated budget while keeping each entity's own numbers visible separately.

How does Small Business Relief affect a budget?

If revenue is expected to stay at or below AED 3,000,000, the budget can reasonably assume no Corporate Tax liability for that period, subject to Small Business Relief conditions and eligibility, rather than budgeting a tax line that likely will not apply.

When during the year should we build a budget?

Businesses often build it a month or two before their fiscal year starts, but a mid-year budget is still useful as a reset.

Do you update the budget once it is set?

The budget itself stays fixed as the baseline. We track actual performance against it monthly and build a separate revised forecast when conditions change.

Can the budget cover multiple locations or entities?

Yes. Multi-location and multi-entity budgets roll up to a consolidated view while keeping each unit's numbers visible.

What software works with budgeting?

Budgeting runs inside Excel or Google Sheets, whichever you already use. If you are not yet set up in either, we can configure a file in your name so you keep ownership of it once the engagement is under way.
