Payroll

End of service benefit calculator (Saudi Labor Law) and GOSI explainer

Short answer

Under Saudi Labor Law the end of service award is half a month's wage for each of the first five years and one month's wage for each year after, on the last wage. The calculator below estimates it in SAR. Finbryn builds the payroll accrual and journals around it; your business pays the award.

How the end of service award is calculated

Article 84 of the Saudi Labor Law sets the award. When the employment relation ends, the employer pays half a month's wage for each of the first five years of service and one month's wage for each year after that. The award is worked on the last wage, and a part year counts in proportion to the time the worker spent on the job. The calculator on this page applies exactly that rule, month by month, so a worker with five years and six months is paid for six extra months at the higher rate.

What changes when the worker resigns

Article 85 cuts the award for a resignation. A worker who resigns after two years and up to five years is entitled to one third of the award, after more than five and under ten years to two thirds, and from ten years to the full award. The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development states that a worker who resigns with under two years of service has no entitlement. Article 87 keeps the full award for a worker who leaves because of force majeure, and for a female worker who ends her contract within six months of marriage or three months of childbirth. Article 80 lists the cases where an employer may end a contract without any award, and the worker must be given the chance to state his objection first. Article 81 lets a worker leave without notice, with his statutory rights intact, where the employer breaches essential obligations.

Which wage counts

The Labor Law (Article 2) uses the actual wage: the basic wage plus the other due increments decided for the worker, including allowances and contractual grants. Article 86 lets employer and worker agree that commissions, sales percentages and similar variable parts are left out. The wage on the contract, the wage on the payslip and the wage in the payroll file often differ by an allowance, so the calculation starts by agreeing the number.

When it must be paid

Article 88 gives the employer one week from the end of the contract to settle wages and entitlements, or two weeks where the worker ends the contract. A leaver whose award was never accrued becomes a cash surprise on exactly that deadline.

Where Finbryn fits

Finbryn does not decide entitlements or pay the award. We build the award schedule worker by worker, accrue the provision every period so it is on the balance sheet before anyone leaves, post the journal, and reconcile GOSI contributions to payroll. Companies on full IFRS measure this liability under IAS 19 (Employee Benefits); the schedule supplies the data for that measurement. The provision also matters at year end: the Zakat regulations add the end of service provision back to the Zakat base.

End of service calculator

Enter the last monthly wage, the years and months of service and how the contract ended. The calculator works the first five years at half a month's wage a year and every later year at a full month's wage, then applies the resignation share from Article 85 or the full award where Article 87 applies. It returns the amount in SAR. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

A worked example, for illustration only: a last wage of SAR 12,000 and six years of service ended by the employer gives five years at half a month, which is SAR 30,000, plus one year at a full month, which is SAR 12,000, for an award of SAR 42,000. The same worker resigning after six years is owed two thirds of that, SAR 28,000.

Basic wage plus the allowances and other increments your contract treats as wage (Article 2). Article 84 uses the last wage.

An estimate from Saudi Labor Law Articles 84, 85, 87 and 80 as published by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development. It is not legal advice and not a settlement figure. Unpaid leave that does not count as service, any payout of unused annual leave, notice pay and contract terms beyond the Labor Law are outside it. GOSI explainer: what it covers and what it does not

GOSI, the General Organization for Social Insurance, runs the Social Insurance Law. Its occupational hazards branch covers every worker regardless of nationality and is paid by the employer. Its annuities branch is compulsory for Saudi workers only. That nationality split is why a payroll with Saudi and non-Saudi staff has two different contribution calculations.

The contribution rates and the contributory wage band are set under the Social Insurance Law and published by GOSI, and they have been changing, so check the current figures on gosi.gov.sa. Under the Social Insurance Law in force from 3 July 2024, Saudis registered before that date stay at 21.5% in total (employer 11.75%, employee 9.75%). For Saudis first registered on or after it, annuities rise by 0.5 point per side each year until 2028. Occupational hazards is 2% paid by the employer for every worker, and unemployment insurance (SANED) applies to Saudis only.

GOSI contributions are a separate stream from the end of service award. The employer registers workers and remits contributions through GOSI's own services; Finbryn reconciles the amounts withheld and accrued in the ledger to what the payroll file and the remittance show, split by nationality.

How end of service and GOSI sit in your payroll accounting

Each pay run produces three liabilities that are easy to blur. Net pay goes out through the bank and the wage protection file on Mudad. The GOSI amounts are owed to GOSI. The end of service award is owed to the worker later, so it is an accrued provision that grows each month.

A clean set of books holds each in its own account, ties the payroll journal to the payroll file, and releases the provision when a worker leaves and the award is paid. Without that, the first leaver after a busy year turns up as an unplanned cash payment, and the year-end balance sheet understates what the business owes.

For the Zakat return the end of service provision is added back to the Zakat base as a liability to non-owners, so the same schedule serves both the accounts and the return preparation.

How we work

The process

  1. 1

    Collect contracts and payroll records

Contracts, the payroll file with each worker's wage components, hire dates and leavers, and the last GOSI and Mudad reports.

  2. 2

    Agree the wage basis

Settle which components count as wage for each worker, including anything agreed under Article 86.

  3. 3

    Build the award schedule

Work each worker's award from the Labor Law articles and show the figure by band, so HR can check the arithmetic.

  4. 4

    Post the provision

Accrue the movement each period and post the journal to the end of service provision account.

  5. 5

    Reconcile GOSI and settle leavers

Tie GOSI withheld and accrued to payroll and remittance, and prepare the exit worksheet when someone leaves.

Common problems we fix

  • The award is accrued as a flat percentage of payroll
Replace it with a worker-by-worker schedule so the provision moves with service and wage, and cross-check it to the Article 84 bands.
  • Wage on the contract, payslip and payroll file all differ
Agree one wage basis per worker and document it, including any Article 86 carve-out for commissions.
  • Leavers are paid but the provision is never released
Release the provision against the settlement and book only the difference to expense.
  • GOSI is calculated as one blended rate for every worker
Split the calculation by nationality and reconcile each part to the GOSI remittance.

Pricing

End of service schedules and accruals are scoped with payroll support, by headcount and how much cleanup is needed first. There is no published rate card for Saudi Arabia yet, so the fee is quoted in writing in Saudi riyals before work starts.

Questions

Frequently asked questions: End of service benefit calculator (Saudi Labor Law) and GOSI explainer

How is end of service calculated in Saudi Arabia?

Half a month's last wage for each of the first five years and a full month's last wage for each year after, with part years counted in proportion (Labor Law Article 84). Use the calculator on this page to see the figure in SAR for your own wage and length of service.

What end of service do I get if I resign?

One third of the award after two years and up to five, two thirds after more than five and under ten, and the full award from ten years (Article 85). Under two years there is no entitlement. Force majeure and the female marriage or childbirth case under Article 87 keep the full award.

Which salary is used for the end of service benefit?

The last actual wage: basic wage plus the other due increments such as allowances and contractual grants (Article 2 and Article 84). Employer and worker may agree to leave out commissions and similar variable parts (Article 86), so check what your contract says.

How soon must the employer pay the end of service award?

Within one week of the end of the contract, or two weeks when the worker ends the contract (Article 88). The employer may deduct any work-related debt due to it from the entitlements.

Does GOSI replace the end of service award?

They are separate. GOSI covers contributions and benefits under the Social Insurance Law, with annuities for Saudi workers only, while the Labor Law sets the end of service award in Articles 84 to 88. Ask GOSI or the Ministry how both apply to a particular worker.

Does Finbryn calculate and pay end of service for us?

We calculate the schedule and the accrual from your contracts and payroll records and post the journal. Your business decides entitlements and pays the award; we do not give legal advice on a dispute.

Is the calculator a legal ruling?

No. It is an estimate from the Labor Law articles as published by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development. Contract terms, unpaid leave, notice pay and disputes sit outside it. The Labor Law has been amended since the 2005 text, so check the current wording on hrsd.gov.sa before relying on an estimate.
