Bookkeeping, Tax Preparation Support and Virtual CFO Services for Charlotte Businesses

Remote service for Charlotte businesses, contracted in the United States.

Short answer

Finbryn provides outsourced bookkeeping, tax preparation support and virtual CFO work for Charlotte businesses, working inside QuickBooks Online or Xero. We track North Carolina's 2 percent corporate income tax rate for 2026 and the April 15 annual report, along with the Mecklenburg County sales tax rate that rose to 8.25 percent on July 1, 2026. Returns are prepared for review and signature by a credentialed preparer.

Charlotte's tax calendar changed this summer. On July 1, 2026, Mecklenburg County added 1 percent to its local sales tax, taking the combined rate from 7.25 percent to 8.25 percent, and the Department of Revenue made updated returns available on August 1. A South End brewery or a NoDa retail shop collects the new rate on taxable sales sourced to the county, while a company just over the line in another county collects at that county's rate. North Carolina's income taxes are falling as well, and its cities can no longer charge a general business license tax, which leaves the state and the county as the layers that matter.

Finbryn is not a Charlotte firm and has no Charlotte office. Work is contracted through Northlane Solutions Inc, a Delaware company, and delivered remotely, inside the QuickBooks Online or Xero file you already have.

This page covers the Mecklenburg sales tax change, the state income and franchise taxes, the January property listing, annual reports and payroll registration, the industries here, the towns around Charlotte, and what a Charlotte hire costs.

Mecklenburg's 8.25 percent sales tax rate

From July 1, 2026 the combined general sales tax rate in Mecklenburg County is 8.25 percent, up from 7.25 percent. The Department of Revenue's notice breaks it into 4.75 percent state, 2.00 percent county, 0.50 percent transit and a new 1.00 percent additional county rate. The new 1 percent applies to every taxable item except those with their own rates: qualifying food at 2 percent, boats at 3 percent, aircraft and manufactured homes at 4.75 percent, and electricity, piped natural gas, video programming, telecommunications and aviation fuel at 7 percent. Retailers collect the new rate on sales and leases sourced to Mecklenburg County.

For the ledger, point-of-sale and ecommerce tax tables need the new rate for county-sourced sales, and the July 1 break shows up in the sales tax payable account. Counties around Charlotte set their own rates and the Department of Revenue publishes them by county, so a business that ships across Mecklenburg, Union, Cabarrus and Gaston counties tracks each destination separately.

State income and franchise taxes, lower each year

North Carolina's corporate income tax rate is 2.00 percent for 2026, down from 2.25 percent in 2025 and 2.50 percent in each of 2019 through 2024, according to the Department of Revenue. The individual income tax is a flat 3.99 percent for 2026 after 4.25 percent in 2025, and that is the rate that matters to LLC and S corporation owners whose profit flows to a personal return.

The franchise tax is a separate line. For a C corporation it is $1.50 per $1,000 of tax base, with a $200 minimum and the tax on the first $1 million of base capped at $500 for tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2025; for S corporations it is $200 on the first $1 million of tax base and $1.50 per $1,000 beyond that. Corporate returns on Form CD-405 are due the 15th day of the fourth month after year-end, April 15 for calendar-year companies. A C corporation expecting $500 or more of tax makes estimated payments on Form CD-429 in the fourth, sixth, ninth and twelfth months of its year.

No city business license, and a January property listing

North Carolina repealed cities' and counties' authority to levy general privilege license taxes for tax years beginning on or after July 1, 2015, under Session Law 2014-3, so a Charlotte business doesn't pay a city business license tax; local beer and wine taxes are the exception. The state's own professional privilege license also ended: the Department of Revenue says that effective July 1, 2024 professional privilege licenses are no longer required, though loan agencies, pawnbrokers and check cashers still need theirs.

What Charlotte businesses do have is a January listing. A business that owns personal property on January 1, including machinery, equipment, furniture, computer systems and leasehold improvements, lists it with the Mecklenburg County Assessor's Office at historical installed cost during January, online through Taxscribe, by mail or in person. Late listings carry a 10 percent penalty on the taxes due. The fixed asset register is the schedule that answers the listing, because it holds installed cost and in-service date for each asset.

Annual reports, payroll registration and unemployment tax

Annual reports go to the Secretary of State. An LLC files by April 15 each year after the year it was created, for $200 on paper or $203 online. A business corporation files by the 15th day of the fourth month after its fiscal year-end, for $25 on paper or $21 online.

On the payroll side, North Carolina's 2026 unemployment taxable wage base is $34,200 per employee. The Division of Employment Security lists a base rate of 1.9 percent, a beginning employer rate of 1 percent and a range from 0.06 percent to 5.76 percent, and employers file and pay through its NCSUITS portal. A business hiring its first North Carolina employee has this account to set up alongside state withholding, and the wage base resets each January, so the ledger should show how much of each employee's pay has already crossed it.

Banks, energy, motorsports and the other businesses behind the work

Charlotte is a banking city, with Bank of America and Duke Energy both headquartered here. That history feeds a regional supply of fintech and payments companies that need customer funds kept apart from operating cash and revenue recognized properly under ASC 606. Racing teams and suppliers cluster around Concord and Mooresville, with sponsorship revenue that arrives in pieces across a season.

Construction and real estate firms need job costing and retainage tracked by project. Trucking and logistics operators connected to the airport and the interstates need per-load margins. Medical and dental groups, restaurants and hospitality operators fill out the rest of the metro's small-business list, and any of them that sells taxable goods or services sourced to Mecklenburg County now collects at 8.25 percent.

Towns and counties around Charlotte

The Census Bureau's Charlotte metro covers eight North Carolina counties, Mecklenburg, Union, Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Rowan and Anson, and three in South Carolina: York, Lancaster and Chester. The places this page covers include Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Matthews, Mint Hill and Pineville in Mecklenburg County, Monroe and Waxhaw in Union County, Concord in Cabarrus County, Gastonia in Gaston County, Mooresville in Iredell County and Fort Mill in York County, South Carolina.

Fort Mill is across the state line, so South Carolina's rules apply there and this page doesn't cover them. Inside North Carolina, Mecklenburg's sales tax change and its January listing apply to the county's towns as well as to Charlotte, while Union, Cabarrus, Gaston and Iredell run their own listings and set their own sales tax rates.

What a Charlotte finance hire costs

The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts 16,820 jobs for accountants and auditors in the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia metro at a mean annual wage of $101,910 in its May 2025 estimates. Bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks number 11,740 at a mean of $53,170, financial managers 9,290 at a mean of $207,510, and tax preparers 850 at a mean of $63,660. Benefits, payroll tax and software seats are extra, and so is the time it takes to find the person.

A monthly Finbryn plan covers the bookkeeping seat or the overflow next to one. It won't sit in your South End office. It does keep the county sales tax account, the fixed asset register and the payroll tax accounts reconciled each month.

How the work runs

Finbryn has no Charlotte office and nobody visits your location. Documents move through a client portal, bank and card feeds connect read-only, and a named team closes the month in your accounting software. A credentialed preparer reviews and signs the returns we prepare support for; the about page explains who signs and with what credentials. Representation before the IRS or the North Carolina Department of Revenue comes only from a CPA, enrolled agent or attorney, never from Finbryn.

Dates for the next twelve months, and a first call

Extended C corporation and individual federal returns are due October 15, 2026. The Mecklenburg property listing runs during January; the county moves the timely date when January 31 falls on a weekend. Form 1099-NEC is due February 1, 2027, S corporation and partnership returns March 15, 2027, and on April 15, 2027 come the LLC annual report, calendar-year corporate returns on Form CD-405 and the federal C corporation and individual returns.

Essentials is $249 a month for up to $50,000 in monthly expenses, Growth is $549 a month up to $150,000, and Scale is quoted; the pricing page lists what each includes. A first call covers where you collect sales tax, what you owned on January 1, and when your annual report is due. Book on the contact page. More cities: Washington DC, Miami and the locations hub.

Questions

Frequently asked questions: Charlotte

What is the sales tax rate in Charlotte?

8.25 percent since July 1, 2026, up from 7.25 percent: 4.75 percent state, 2.00 percent county, 0.50 percent transit and a new 1.00 percent additional county rate, per the Department of Revenue's notice we checked on 2026-10-08. Qualifying food is taxed at 2 percent and a few items, such as electricity and telecommunications, at 7 percent.

Does Charlotte charge a city business license tax?

No. North Carolina ended cities' and counties' general privilege license taxes for tax years beginning on or after July 1, 2015, as the UNC School of Government summarizes Session Law 2014-3. The state's own professional privilege license ended on July 1, 2024, according to the Department of Revenue.

When do I list business personal property in Mecklenburg County?

During January each year, for property you own on January 1. The Assessor's Office accepts listings online through Taxscribe, by mail or in person, and late listings carry a 10 percent penalty on the taxes due (page checked 2026-10-08).

What is North Carolina's corporate income tax rate for 2026?

2.00 percent, down from 2.25 percent in 2025, according to the Department of Revenue. The separate franchise tax is $1.50 per $1,000 of tax base, with a $200 minimum and a $500 cap on the tax for the first $1 million of base. Corporate returns for calendar-year companies are due April 15, 2027 for tax year 2026.

When is the North Carolina annual report due for an LLC?

April 15 each year after the year of creation. The Secretary of State charges $200 on paper and $203 online, per its due-date page checked 2026-10-08, and the next one is due April 15, 2027.

Does Finbryn have an office in Charlotte?

No. Finbryn is remote and contracted through Northlane Solutions Inc, a Delaware company, with no Charlotte office or local staff. The remote setup doesn't change any date, including the January 31, 2027 end of the Mecklenburg listing period.

I have an employee in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Does North Carolina tax apply?

Fort Mill is in York County, South Carolina, so South Carolina's rules apply to work done there, not North Carolina's. The Census Bureau's 2023 metro definition puts York County inside the Charlotte metro, which is why the question comes up. We set up a payroll liability account for each state before the first pay run; South Carolina specifics aren't covered on this page.

How does a Finbryn plan compare with hiring a bookkeeper in Charlotte?

BLS puts the mean wage for bookkeeping and accounting clerks in the metro at $53,170 as of May 2025, before payroll tax, benefits and software. Essentials runs $249 a month and Growth $549 a month on the pricing page we checked on 2026-10-08.
