Bookkeeping, Tax Preparation Support and Virtual CFO Services for Las Vegas Businesses

Remote service for Las Vegas businesses, contracted in the United States.

Short answer

Finbryn provides outsourced bookkeeping, tax preparation support and virtual CFO work for Las Vegas businesses, with payroll and tips reconciled to the Nevada Modified Business Tax return each quarter (the state has compared the two since January 1, 2026) and Nevada revenue tracked against the $4,000,000 Commerce Tax line. Returns are prepared for review and signature by the credentialed preparer.

Nevada has no personal income tax, and the Department of Taxation says so plainly on its website. A Las Vegas owner who read only that line could think the state asks little of a business. It asks quite a lot. There is a payroll tax on wages above $50,000 a quarter, a gross revenue tax on businesses above $4,000,000, an annual state business license, a Clark County sales tax rate of 8.375 percent, and one or more local licenses depending on which side of a municipal boundary the premises sit.

Enforcement picked up this year. The Department of Taxation compares the wages on each quarterly Modified Business Tax return with the wages the employer reported to the Employment Security Division, and that comparison resumed on January 1, 2026. A hospitality payroll that includes tips, bonuses and many part-time shifts is the kind of record where the two numbers can drift apart.

Finbryn works remotely and has no Las Vegas office; the work is contracted through Northlane Solutions Inc, a Delaware company. The figures on this page were checked against the agency pages in the sources on October 8, 2026.

The Modified Business Tax and the wage comparison

The Modified Business Tax, or MBT, is Nevada's payroll tax. Every employer covered by the state's unemployment law is automatically set up with an MBT account, except nonprofit 501(c) organizations, tribes and political subdivisions. For most general businesses the rate has been 1.17 percent since July 1, 2023, charged on gross wages above the first $50,000 in a calendar quarter, less the health care benefits the employer pays. Financial institutions pay 1.554 percent on all wages. Gross wages include reported tips, which matters for any employer with tipped staff.

The return is due on or before the last day of the month after each quarter, and every employer files one whether or not tax is due. The comparison is the new part. The Department says the wages on the MBT return must match the wages reported to the Employment Security Division, and it compares them quarterly. If no return exists, it bills the tax based on the ESD wages; if the return shows lower wages, it bills the difference with penalties and interest. A petition for redetermination has to be filed within 45 days. Our payroll reconciliation ties the payroll journal, the unemployment report and the MBT return to one gross wage figure before anything is filed; see payroll journals and reconciliations.

Commerce Tax: tracking revenue on a July to June year

The Commerce Tax applies to a business whose Nevada gross revenue exceeds $4,000,000 in a fiscal year, and the tax rate varies by industry. The fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30, so the return is due 45 days after June 30, which is generally August 14, or the next business day when that falls on a weekend or holiday. The return for the 2025 to 2026 year was due August 14, 2026. A business can file and pay through My Nevada Tax, and a 30-day extension form exists.

Two habits keep a Las Vegas company out of trouble. The first is a revenue report cut at June 30 rather than December 31, kept by industry classification, because the Commerce Tax is calculated from the industry code. The second is a note of which revenue is Nevada-sourced when a company also sells elsewhere. The Commerce Tax paid also earns a credit that can be applied against the MBT for the four calendar quarters after the Commerce Tax year ends, so the two taxes belong in the same workpaper. Much of this lives in month-end close schedules.

State license, local licenses and sales tax

A Nevada state business license is renewed every year. The Secretary of State's FAQ puts the fee at $500 for corporations and $200 for all other business types, due on the last day of the anniversary month, and for entities formed under Title 7 it comes with the annual list of officers, in addition to the list fee. Local licenses are a separate matter. The City of Las Vegas business licensing guide says Southern Nevada has several local licensing jurisdictions, names Clark County, North Las Vegas and Henderson alongside the city, and warns that a company working in more than one may need a license from each. Paradise, Spring Valley, Summerlin South and Sunrise Manor are Census-designated places rather than cities, so check the address before assuming which office applies.

Sales tax is simpler to state than to run. The Department of Taxation lists the Clark County rate at 8.375 percent since January 1, 2020, on a 6.85 percent statewide base. Its home page now says Sales and Use Tax returns are due on the 20th of the month, and that Phase 3 of My Nevada Tax launches December 7, 2026, moving the lodging room tax and several other tax types to online filing. We keep the registration list and the due-date calendar current in the state registrations record.

Hospitality payroll and tips

Restaurants, bars, hotels and entertainment venues run on tipped labor, and their ledgers are shaped by it. Under IRS guidance, employees report cash tips to the employer by the 10th day of the month after receiving them, so tips received in August are reported by September 10. Employers with large food or beverage establishments also file Form 8027 each year to report receipts and tips and to determine allocated tips. The Nevada MBT then counts reported tips in the wage base.

In the books, that means tip income, tip pooling, credit card tip payouts and the processing fee on those payouts each need their own accounts, and the payroll register has to tie to the general ledger every pay period. Multi-venue operators add a layer: sales, labor and licenses by venue, with a consolidated view for the owners. Our class and location tracking setup handles that split. For a restaurant group, the same discipline applies to daily point-of-sale deposits that mix sales, tips, tax and card fees into one bank credit.

Beyond the Strip: contractors, property and clinics

Construction and home services companies in Henderson and North Las Vegas carry job costing, retention and subcontractor 1099 volume. Property managers handle security deposits and owner statements for residential and commercial buildings. Medical and dental practices separate patient receivables from payer remittances and often run several clinics under one owner. Trucking and logistics companies near the interstate routes track fuel and per-load costs. Online sellers with a Nevada address still need the rate and nexus rules of every other state they ship to, which is the work described under sales tax filings and nexus.

For each of these, the first month is the same: map the chart of accounts to the Nevada taxes that apply, set the quarterly MBT reconciliation, and put the August Commerce Tax check on the calendar. After that it is monthly bookkeeping and a reconciled close, which we run through QuickBooks Online or Xero.

Pay data in a metro with more clerks than accountants

BLS May 2025 estimates for the Las Vegas-Henderson-North Las Vegas metro count 10,320 jobs for bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks, against 4,680 jobs for accountants and auditors. That is more than two clerks for each accountant, while nationally the two groups are close to even at 1,373,680 jobs for clerks and 1,449,500 jobs for accountants and auditors. Mean wages are $51,990 for the clerks, below the national $53,560, and $88,560 for accountants and auditors against $94,750 nationally, with a median of $80,530. Tax preparers average $70,630 here, above the national $60,930. Financial managers average $156,540.

Those figures are before payroll tax, benefits and software. A plan from Finbryn is $249 a month (Essentials, up to $50,000 in monthly expenses) or $549 a month (Growth, up to $150,000), on the pricing page. If you want the accounting function to sit in the building with a person who knows the venue, hire. If you want the ledger closed and reconciled on a repeatable procedure, a plan fits.

Working with us from Las Vegas

The engagement is remote from the first call, with no Las Vegas office or local staff, and the accounting file stays in your name. Each quarter we ask for the wage total shown in the employer's Employment Security Division portal so it can be checked against the MBT return before filing. Documents travel through a client portal and each close returns a reconciled profit and loss and balance sheet. For tax work we prepare the books and supporting schedules, and the return is prepared for review and signature by the credentialed preparer.

How to start

Use the contact page and tell us your payroll provider, your Nevada tax accounts and whether your revenue is near the Commerce Tax line. Catch-up work is scoped apart from the monthly ledger, and the terms go into an engagement letter before anything starts. A Colorado business faces a different local payroll tax, covered on the Denver page, and every metro is on the locations hub.

Questions

Frequently asked questions: Las Vegas

Does Nevada have a state income tax that applies to my business?

The Department of Taxation's page, checked October 8, 2026, says Nevada has no individual income tax, and it names the Commerce Tax for businesses with Nevada gross revenue above $4,000,000 as a business tax. The Modified Business Tax is a separate payroll tax. Federal income tax still applies in full.

When is the Nevada Commerce Tax return due?

45 days after the fiscal year ends on June 30, which is generally August 14. For the 2025 to 2026 year the Department listed August 14, 2026, and when the date falls on a weekend or holiday the return is due the next business day. Only businesses above $4,000,000 in Nevada gross revenue must file.

How is the Modified Business Tax calculated, and when is it due?

For most general businesses it is 1.17 percent of gross wages above $50,000 in a calendar quarter, less employer-paid health care benefits, and the return is due by the last day of the month after the quarter. Reported tips count as wages, and the Department compares the wages with those reported to the Employment Security Division, a comparison that resumed on January 1, 2026.

What sales tax rate applies in Las Vegas?

The Department of Taxation lists Clark County at 8.375 percent, effective January 1, 2020, on top of a 6.85 percent statewide base. Its home page, checked October 8, 2026, says Sales and Use Tax returns are due on the 20th of the month.

What does a Nevada state business license cost?

The Secretary of State's FAQ, checked October 8, 2026, lists $500 a year for corporations and $200 for all other business types, due on the last day of the anniversary month. For Title 7 entities, it is paid with the annual list of officers, in addition to the list fee.

Do I need licenses from both the City of Las Vegas and Clark County?

Possibly. The city's business licensing guide, checked October 8, 2026, says Southern Nevada has several licensing jurisdictions, including Clark County, North Las Vegas and Henderson, and a business working in more than one may need a license from each. Start by checking which jurisdiction covers your address.

Can you handle tip reporting and Form 8027 schedules for a restaurant?

We prepare the tip schedules and reconcile them to payroll. Under IRS guidance checked October 8, 2026, employees report tips to the employer by the 10th of the following month, and employers with large food or beverage establishments file Form 8027. The credentialed preparer reviews and signs any return.

Does Finbryn have an office in Las Vegas?

No. As of October 8, 2026 the service is remote, with no Las Vegas address or local staff, and the work is contracted through Northlane Solutions Inc, a Delaware company. Credentials for the people who sign returns are on the about page.
