What this hub covers
Four kinds of numbers get pushed to the end of the close because each needs a model and a memo as well as a journal entry: the allowance for credit losses on receivables and loans, the accounting for a swap or forward as a hedge, the fair value of a derivative or warrant, and the fair value disclosures that follow. Finbryn builds the model, writes the supporting memo and drafts the disclosure for management to review.
Who it is for
Controllers and CFOs of companies that sell on credit, borrow at floating rates, hold warrants or earnouts, or report to an IFRS parent from a US ledger. Small lenders belong here too, and the lender page says plainly where model validation sits.
The six services
- CECL for trade receivables and contract assets: the provision matrix and the ASU 2025-05 practical expedient.
- IFRS 9 expected credit loss modeling: stage allocation and default inputs for IFRS reporters with US operations.
- CECL model support for lenders: community lenders, credit unions and fintech lenders.
- Hedge accounting under ASC 815 and IFRS 9: designation memos, effectiveness assessments and the private-company simplified approach.
- Derivative valuation for financial reporting: swaps, forwards, warrants and embedded features.
- Fair value measurement under ASC 820 and IFRS 13: hierarchy, valuation memos and disclosure schedules.
Neighboring work sits elsewhere. Chasing the receivables themselves is collections, restating a foreign-owned subsidiary's books is US GAAP conversion, and covenant calculations that reference a swap live in lender covenant reporting.
What changed recently
FASB issued ASU 2025-05 in July 2025, adding a practical expedient for current receivables and contract assets that applies to annual periods beginning after December 15, 2025. ASU 2025-09, issued in November 2025, revised five areas of hedge accounting and takes effect for entities that are not public business entities in annual periods beginning after December 15, 2027. Each service page lists its primary sources and the date they were checked. The CECL versus IFRS 9 guide sets the two credit loss models side by side.
Where Finbryn stops
Management owns the allowance, the hedge designation and the fair value conclusion, and the company's auditor evaluates them. Finbryn issues no fairness opinion or valuation opinion, does not validate a model it built, does not execute trades and does not advise on whether to hedge. The how it works page describes the review steps.

Questions
Frequently asked questions: Credit loss, derivatives and fair value
Who can build a CECL model for my company?
Finbryn builds CECL models for companies with trade receivables and for small lenders, then documents them for management to approve. ASC 326-20-30-3 allows aging, loss-rate, roll-rate, probability-of-default and discounted cash flow methods, so the model is sized to the portfolio (FASB ASU 2016-13, checked 2026-10-16). Start with CECL for trade receivables.
What is the difference between CECL and IFRS 9 expected credit loss?
CECL records lifetime expected losses from the day an asset is recognized, while IFRS 9 starts with 12-month expected losses and moves to lifetime losses after a significant increase in credit risk (FASB basis for conclusions in ASU 2016-13, paragraph BC131, checked 2026-10-16). The full comparison is in the CECL versus IFRS 9 guide.
Can a private company use hedge accounting for an interest rate swap?
Yes, if the swap and the documentation meet ASC 815. A private company that is not a financial institution may also use the simplified approach for a plain receive-variable, pay-fixed swap, and then all documentation is due by the date the first annual financial statements are available to be issued (ASU 2017-12, checked 2026-10-16). See hedge accounting support.
Who values a swap, warrant or earnout for the financial statements?
Management owns the fair value conclusion, and Finbryn prepares the valuation workbook, inputs and memo behind it for the audit. For Level 3 items the auditor may engage its own specialist, and the work is a reporting valuation, never a fairness opinion or a 409A valuation (scope as of 2026-10-16). See derivative valuation for financial reporting.
Does Finbryn validate the models it builds?
No. A model should be reviewed by someone who did not build it, and the 2023 interagency policy statement on allowances for credit losses (Federal Register, April 27, 2023) describes review by a party that is independent of the credit approval and allowance estimation processes. Finbryn documents its models so that an independent reviewer can test them.
What do you need from us to start?
For a receivables model, an aging export at each past reporting date plus write-offs and cash receipts. For a hedge, the loan agreement, the swap confirmation and the trade date. For a valuation, the instrument terms and the reporting date. A short data request sheet lists the exact fields, the scoping call is booked from the contact page, and the fee is confirmed in writing before work starts (page reviewed 2026-10-16).
