Bookkeeping, Tax Preparation Support and Virtual CFO Services for San Diego Businesses

Remote service for San Diego businesses, contracted in the United States.

Short answer

Finbryn provides remote bookkeeping, tax preparation support and virtual CFO work for San Diego businesses, with books kept in QuickBooks Online or Xero and built around California and San Diego rules. As of October 1, 2026, the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration lists a 7.75% combined sales tax rate in the city, and a City Business Tax Certificate costs $34 a year for twelve or fewer employees.

San Diego doesn't run on one industry, and the bookkeeping shows it. Life science companies around Torrey Pines and Sorrento Valley spend years on research before a product sells. Defense and maritime suppliers around the bay bill against contracts that need job-level records. Breweries and restaurants live on thin margins across several sites. Hotels carry a lodging tax that changed in 2025. Manufacturers near Otay Mesa buy and sell in two currencies.

What ties them together is a stack of rules sitting on the California baseline. The Franchise Tax Board wants its $800. The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) sets a sales tax rate that shifts between cities a few miles apart. The City Treasurer issues the Business Tax Certificate, collects district assessments and administers a three-zone hotel tax. The county clerk handles business names.

Finbryn has no San Diego office and no local staff. It's a remote service, contracted in the United States, and the sections below show how each San Diego layer gets built into a ledger that stays in your name.

State and city charges that land on a San Diego ledger

California's franchise tax comes first. Every LLC organized or doing business in the state owes an annual tax of $800, and it's owed even when the LLC isn't operating, until the entity is cancelled. An LLC with more than $250,000 in California income also owes a fee that starts at $900 and tops out at $11,790 for income of $5,000,000 or more. C corporations pay 8.84% on California income and S corporations 1.5%, each with the same $800 minimum (Franchise Tax Board pages, checked October 8, 2026).

The City of San Diego stacks its own charges on top. Any business operating inside city limits needs a Business Tax Certificate, home-based businesses and independent contractors included. The annual tax is $34 for a business with twelve or fewer employees, and $125 plus $5 per employee for thirteen or more. A $4 state accessibility fee is added to each application and renewal, and since July 1, 2025 the City has also billed a Minimum Wage Enforcement Fee of $1.47 per employee a year. A business inside one of the City's eighteen Business Improvement Districts pays that district's assessment through the same Treasurer's office.

None of these amounts is large. Each one still needs its own account in the chart, or the year-end return picks up a single "taxes and licenses" line that nobody can reconcile to a bill.

Hotel tax in three zones since Measure C

Hospitality is a big part of the local economy, and it has its own tax. Voters approved Measure C, and on rent collected on or after May 1, 2025 the Transient Occupancy Tax is 11.75%, 12.75% or 13.75%, depending on which of three tax zones the property sits in. Until April 30, 2025 the City charged a single 10.50%. Lodging businesses with 70 or more rooms also pay a 2.00% Tourism Marketing District assessment, which the operator may pass through to the guest.

Operators remit monthly. Tax collected in April, for example, is due by May 31. A late payment draws a penalty of 1% on the first delinquent day plus one-third of 1% for each day after, capped at 25% (City Treasurer page, checked October 8, 2026).

In the books, that comes down to three habits: each property's zone is documented in the file, collected tax is booked to a liability account instead of revenue, and the monthly remittance is matched to the booking system's report before it goes out.

Sales tax at the city line, and the places we work

Finbryn serves businesses across San Diego County from one remote team, and the sales tax rate is the first thing that changes when a business crosses a city line. California's statewide base is 7.25%, and district taxes sit on top. CDTFA's rate table effective October 1, 2026 puts all eighteen incorporated cities in the county between 7.75% and 8.75%. Showing 13 of the 18, the cities this page covers.

A business with a shop in Carlsbad and a showroom in Chula Vista collects at two rates, and the ledger has to keep the two liabilities apart so each return ties out. CDTFA's rate-by-address lookup settles the rate for a given address. For a deeper look at when a seller crosses into California, see the sales tax nexus guide.

Payroll: a city minimum wage above the state's

California's statewide minimum is $16.90 an hour in 2026. The City of San Diego sets a higher one: $17.75 for anyone who works at least two hours in a week inside city limits, rising to $18.35 on January 1, 2027, per the City's posted notice. Only hours worked inside the city count toward that rate, so a technician who splits a week between La Mesa and downtown San Diego is covered for the downtown hours alone.

For the books, that has three consequences. Payroll software needs a work location on every employee profile. Labor cost forecasts need the January step built in. And tips can't be used to reach the wage, since the City's notice says tips don't count toward it. Gusto, ADP and Rippling all carry location settings; the usual failure is a profile that never got updated when someone changed sites.

What each San Diego industry needs from the books

Life science companies need grant and collaboration revenue kept apart from product revenue, and every research dollar tagged to a project. Federal law changed here: section 174A, added in 2025, lets taxpayers deduct domestic research costs for taxable years beginning after December 31, 2024, and the IRS laid out the method change in Revenue Procedure 2025-28. Project-level cost detail gives the credentialed preparer what is needed either way.

Defense and maritime suppliers need job-cost ledgers where direct labor, materials and overhead stay separate and every contract carries its own margin. Breweries, taprooms and restaurants run point-of-sale reports, tip pools and sales tax by site, and all of it has to reconcile monthly. Hotels and vacation rental operators carry the lodging tax above. Manufacturers in the Otay Mesa corridor often transact in pesos and dollars, which turns exchange gains and losses into a monthly line instead of a year-end surprise.

Hiring in San Diego compared with working with Finbryn

The Bureau of Labor Statistics' May 2025 estimates count 12,830 jobs in the bookkeeping clerk group (occupation code 43-3031) in the San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad metro. The mean annual wage is $60,220, the median $58,580, and the top tenth earns above $82,350. For a controller or part-time CFO, the nearest BLS group is financial managers: 7,350 jobs, a mean of $198,640 and a median of $174,210.

Those are wages only. Payroll tax, benefits, software seats and a recruiting cycle come on top, and one bookkeeper is still a single point of failure when they're out. A Finbryn plan swaps that for a fixed monthly fee. The tradeoff is real, though. If you want someone in the building who answers the phone down the hall, hire that person; Finbryn works remotely and doesn't replace them.

How a San Diego engagement runs, and what it costs

Statements and tax documents move through a secure client portal, bank and card feeds connect into QuickBooks Online or Xero, and the file stays in your name from the first day. There is no San Diego office to visit and no in-person step anywhere in the process.

Published plans begin at $249 a month for Essentials (up to $50,000 in monthly expenses), and Growth is $549 a month up to $150,000; the pricing page has the rest. Tax work is preparation support: schedules and workpapers are prepared for review and signature by the credentialed preparer, who signs and files the return, and the about page names the people. To start, use the contact page, send the last few statements and tell us which of the layers above apply. The first close comes back reconciled inside your software with a list of open items. The fee is $54 for the first name, you publish a notice once a week for four weeks, and the filing expires after five years (county page checked October 8, 2026).
