How Much Does Small Business Tax Preparation Cost in 2026?

Short answer

Small business tax preparation cost depends on the form. NSA's survey of 2020 fees averaged $903 for an S corporation and $733 for a partnership, and NATP's 2025 study averages $236 for a base 1040 among preparers using a minimum fee. Finbryn provides tax preparation support from $1,200 a year for business returns, filed by a credentialed signer or partner.

Key takeaways

  • The NATP 2025 Fee Study (November 2025) puts the average base Form 1040 with Schedules 1 to 3 at $236 among preparers who charge a minimum fee plus complexity, and half of those preparers charge between $150 and $328. By designation, CPAs averaged $280, enrolled agents $228 and preparers with no designation $186.
  • The latest per-form business averages we could open come from the NSA Income and Fees study for 2020-2021: $733 for a Form 1065, $903 for a Form 1120-S, $913 for a Form 1120 and $192 for a Schedule C. They reflect fees reported in 2020, about six years ago, and are not adjusted for inflation. NATP reports that 83% of preparers raise fees every one to two years, typically by 6 to 10%.
  • Quotes differ because the work differs. In the NATP study, 94% of preparers said the complexity of the client's tax situation drives the value of their service and 83% said time and effort do. Clean books shorten the time.
  • Finbryn prices business tax preparation support from $1,200 a year and personal returns from $499 a year. Finbryn prepares the workpapers, and a credentialed signer or partner prepares, signs and files the return, and the IRS requires every paid preparer to hold a PTIN and sign.
  • Compare quotes on scope, not headline price: forms, states, extensions, estimated payments, who signs and whether a notice response is included.

How much does a small business tax return cost, form by form?

Two professional associations publish fee surveys, and between them they cover most small business returns. The NATP 2025 Fee Study (November 2025) is current but reports individual returns in detail. The NSA Income and Fees study for 2020-2021 reports business returns and is the latest we could open with per-form figures. Both are averages of what preparers say they charge, not quotes.

Form 5500, pension or profit-sharing plan$615NSA, 2018 (not reported for 2020)

A 2026 quote will usually land above the 2020 averages. NATP reports that 83% of preparers raise fees every one to two years, typically by 6 to 10%, and 68% plan to raise them next year (2025). We have not applied an inflation factor to the NSA figures, because no survey we opened publishes a current average for business returns.

What do these surveys leave out?

Read the table with the respondents in mind. NATP's 2025 respondents were mostly individual-return preparers: 55% primarily prepare Form 1040 returns with common schedules and 6% primarily prepare business or fiduciary returns. Enrolled agents were 43% of respondents and CPAs 21%, and a respondent could hold more than one designation. NSA's 2020-2021 report describes a typical respondent as an enrolled agent (45%), a sole proprietor (32%) and 29 years in practice. Neither survey is a poll of firms that specialize in multi-state S corporations.

The public NATP materials we opened show business-return fees nowhere. The media highlights chart only 1040 schedules, and NATP's own guide points to a full study for exact figures. We found no 2024 or 2025 published average for a Form 1065 or Form 1120-S in the documents we opened (checked 2026-10-18). Vendor blogs often quote ranges for business returns without naming a survey, and we have not repeated figures we could not trace to a source.

What the surveys do establish is the shape of pricing. The NSA series for the Form 1120-S runs $656 in 2007, $717 in 2012, $778 in 2014, $809 in 2016, $807 in 2018 and $903 in 2020, a rise of 38% over 13 years. Business returns cost several times what a simple individual return does, and the gap comes from entity-level work.

Why do quotes for the same return differ so much?

Preparers price on judgment, and the NATP study says so. Asked what they consider when valuing a service, 94% named the complexity of the client's tax situation, 83% the time and effort required, 69% their own expertise, 49% the level of risk or liability and 46% the potential tax savings. Asked what influences their pricing decisions, 69% named the uniqueness of their expertise and 52% market rates for similar services.

Credentials move the average too. The table shows the base Form 1040 with Schedules 1 to 3 from the NATP study.

PreparerBase 1040 averageMiddle half
Annual Filing Season Program participant$184$115 to $235
No designation$186$121 to $248
Enrolled agent$228$150 to $300
CPA$280$200 to $425

State returns add to the bill. NATP reports that a majority of preparers charge separately for state returns, either for every one or when there is more than one, and that the average preparer files for clients in 8 to 9 states. A business with owners in two states is often a three-return job before it is a business return.

What makes a business return cost more?

Five things move the fee, in roughly the order they show up on an invoice.

First, the number of returns. An S corporation return comes with owner returns, state returns and a K-1 for each shareholder. A partnership return multiplies that.

Second, the condition of the books. A preparer who receives a reconciled ledger prepares. A preparer who receives a shoebox reconciles first, and reconciling is billable time. The NATP average set hourly rate was $182 in 2025 (7% of respondents charge one, and half of those preparers fall between $129 and $250), and NSA's survey of 2020 fees averaged $179.81 an hour for a Form 1120-S. Our catch-up bookkeeping guide covers how to fix the year before it reaches the preparer.

Third, payroll and contractors. Payroll totals on Forms 941 must tie to W-2s and to the ledger, and contractors paid $2,000 or more in 2026 need a Form 1099-NEC due February 1, 2027. The Form 1099 guide lists the rules.

Fourth, fixed assets, inventory and owner basis, which need schedules that a simple return does not.

Fifth, timing. Calendar-year 2026 returns for S corporations and partnerships are due March 15, 2027, and those for individuals and C corporations April 15, 2027 (IRS Publication 509 rule, checked 2026-10-18). Rush work before a deadline can carry a premium, so ask for the delivery date in writing.

Where does the signer fit into the fee?

The IRS says on its PTIN page (reviewed October 15, 2026) that anyone paid to prepare returns must have a valid 2027 PTIN before preparing them, and Treasury regulation 26 CFR 1.6695-1(b) has the preparer with primary responsibility sign the return after it is complete and before it is presented to the taxpayer. The IRS credentials page (reviewed January 29, 2026) adds that CPAs, enrolled agents and attorneys have unlimited representation rights before the IRS, while a preparer with only a PTIN has none.

That is how Finbryn frames its tax work: preparation support. Finbryn prepares the workpapers, and a credentialed signer or partner prepares, signs and files the return as preparer of record. If the IRS writes to you later, representation comes only from a named CPA partner, enrolled agent or attorney, and the engagement letter says whether that is included. Ask every provider the same question: who signs, what is their PTIN, and what happens when a notice arrives? The guide to choosing a tax preparation support provider has the full checklist.

One warning from the IRS (Tax Tip 2026-11, February 10, 2026): avoid preparers who base their fees on a percentage of your refund. Always review the return before signing, and never sign a blank or incomplete one.

What does Finbryn charge, and what is in the price?

These are the starting prices on Finbryn's published pricing page, checked on 2026-10-18. A starting price is not a quote: the engagement letter lists the forms, the states and who signs, and sets the final fee.

ServiceStarting price
Business tax preparation support (Form 1120, 1120-S or 1065), via a credentialed signerfrom $1,200 a year
Personal tax return support (Form 1040)from $499 a year
Sales tax return preparation support and nexus trackingfrom $125 a month
Foreign-owned US LLC compliance (Form 5472 and pro-forma 1120)from $800 a year
Monthly bookkeeping, Essentials$249 a month
Catch-up bookkeeping$249 per backlog month

See tax preparation support, the S corporation return page and the partnership return page for what each covers. The surveys above are averages across thousands of different jobs, so compare a quote against its scope rather than against a headline number. A lower price that excludes the state returns, the extension or the estimated payments is not lower.

Seven questions that get you a fair quote

  1. Which forms are included: the entity return, each owner's return, each state?
  2. Who signs, and can I see the preparer's PTIN and credential on the IRS directory?
  3. Is the fee fixed, hourly or a minimum plus complexity? NATP reports that nearly half of preparers set a minimum fee and adjust it for complexity.
  4. Does the quote assume reconciled books, and what happens if the ledger needs work?
  5. Are the extension, the estimated tax calculations and the 1099 filings included?
  6. What happens if the IRS sends a notice, and who represents me?
  7. When will the return be delivered, and what is the fee for a rush?

A quote that answers all seven in writing is comparable. One that answers three is a price for part of the job. If you want to see how clean books change the work, start with the monthly bookkeeping service or the bookkeeping cost guide. Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does small business tax preparation cost?

It depends on the form. The NATP 2025 Fee Study averages $236 for a base individual return among preparers using a minimum fee, and NSA's survey of 2020 fees averaged $733 for a partnership return, $903 for an S corporation and $913 for a C corporation. Finbryn business tax preparation support starts at $1,200 a year (checked 2026-10-18).

How much does an accountant charge for an S corporation tax return?

NSA's survey of 2020 fees averaged $903 for a Form 1120-S, the latest per-form average we could open. NATP reports that 83% of preparers raise fees every one to two years, typically by 6 to 10%, so a current quote is usually higher. Finbryn starts at $1,200 a year for business returns.

How much does a Schedule C add to the cost of my tax return?

NSA's survey of 2020 fees averaged $192 for a Schedule C, charged on top of the Form 1040. NATP's 2025 study also prices Schedule C as an add-on to the base 1040, but its public highlights do not publish that figure. Expect more if the business has inventory, a home office or multiple states.

Is a CPA more expensive than an enrolled agent or other preparer?

For a base Form 1040 in the NATP 2025 study, CPAs averaged $280, enrolled agents $228, Annual Filing Season Program participants $184 and preparers with no designation $186. The credential also decides who holds representation rights at the IRS, which the IRS lists as unlimited for CPAs and enrolled agents.

Why do tax preparers charge extra for state returns?

A state return is separate work, and NATP reports that a majority of preparers charge for state returns separately, either for all of them or when there is more than one. The average preparer files for clients in 8 to 9 states (NATP 2025). Ask any quote whether state returns are included.

Should a tax preparer charge a percentage of my refund?

No. The IRS says taxpayers should avoid preparers who base their fees on a percentage of the refund (Tax Tip 2026-11, February 10, 2026). Always review the return before signing and never sign a blank or incomplete one.

When are small business tax returns due in 2027?

For calendar-year 2026, S corporation (Form 1120-S) and partnership (Form 1065) returns are due March 15, 2027. Individual (Form 1040) and C corporation (Form 1120) returns are due April 15, 2027. These follow the 15th-day-of-the-3rd-and-4th-month rules in IRS Publication 509 (checked 2026-10-18).

What does Finbryn charge for business tax preparation?

Finbryn business tax preparation support starts at $1,200 a year for Forms 1120, 1120-S and 1065, and personal return support starts at $499 a year, per its pricing page checked 2026-10-18. A credentialed signer or partner prepares, signs and files the return, and the engagement letter sets the final fee.
